I am really enjoying this series of books, they keep getting better and better. This one was only 375 different characters and based on a Pu Songling story. Called the bookworm, (or Book idiot) it was about a man who loved books more than anything and instilled that love in his son. At 30 the son was all alone, had achieved nothing, but loved to read. In Zeitins book on Pu Songling she discusses the obsession that is the focus of this story. Shu tians love of books brings a real life woman out of the book he is reading. She makes him promise not to read anymore, instead she teaches him how to play chess, drink wine and make friends. They end up having a son, and then a year later she threatens to leave him unless he burns all his books. He refuses. A magistrate finds out about the beautiful wife and beats Shu tian until he tells them her secret. The magistrate ends up burning all the books, and the wife and son are never seen again. While simple to read there are some great moments, my favourite was talking about one of the ways to drink wine, 就是看看书喝点儿酒,喝点儿酒看看书。。。 which caused Shu tian to respond, 我太喜欢这么喝酒了,看书喝酒,喝就看书很有意思 Naturally I totally agreed, though fear even a beautiful woman appearing out of a book wouldnt be enough to stop me reading!

Adrian Mole has grown up. At least that’s what it says on his passport. But living at home, clinging to his threadbare cuddly rabbit ‘Pinky’, working as a paper pusher for the DoE and pining for the love of his life Pandora has proved to him that adulthood isn’t quite what he hoped it would be. Still, intellectual poets can’t always have things their own way …Included here are two other less well-known diarists: Sue Townsend and Margaret Hilda Roberts, a rather ambitious grocer’s daughter from Grantham.

This is the first book of this kind that I have read. I hadnt heard about this case before I read it in the book. I will say it was pretty informative, and thought it was good that they made the public aware of the case to make it aware that things like infanticide really do happen. I like how the book also goes to tell the public that they are not discrediting SIDS, just that they are saying that it is possible that babies can be killed by a caretaker and claim SIDS took the life when it really was the caretaker. Im glad that Mrs. Hoyt didnt get away with murder.

Book description
Beautiful Child by Torey Hayden was an amazing memoir. The setting for the majority of the book was a classroom, as the narrator (Torey Hayden) is a special education teacher. There were five students in her classroom: an aggressive, loud nine-year-old named Billy, an eight year old named Jesse dealing with Tourettes Syndrome, six year old twins who had suffered FAS (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome) and had various behavioral problems, and then there was seven-year-old Venus Fox. Venus was the hardest one to understand. She never said a word during class and rarely looked up or even moved without being forced to. Throughout the book, the main character is trying to get Venus to respond and attempting to discover the reason behind the childs silence. The entire story is told using the authors point of view (since it is a memoir). However, the character who the reader really focuses on is Venus. At first, Venuss character frustrated me; I really didnt understand how she could be so unresponsive to the point where she didnt even move without being forced to. It confused me when it was revealed that she was not actually calm on the inside and whenever someone touched her, she went crazy and started beating them up. There didnt seem like there was really could be a reason for her to act so uncooperative. However, my frustration turned to sympathy as more was gradually uncovered about Venuss background. I realized that there really was a lot more going on in her life that no one but Venus was aware of. By the end of the book, her character had developed a lot more and she had become a girl who learned to express herself and respond. I had become a big fan of Venus as the book developed. I found myself cheering her on and smiling whenever she managed to make a gesture.I would recommend this book to any young adult/adult readers. I dont think that it would be as suitable of a book for younger kids because there are some concepts in the book that are very psychological and violent. Younger children would not handle this book as well as teenagers and adults. I would recommend this book because it really uncovered what life was like for kids with problems. Not only did it have the touching story of Venus Fox who refused to talk, but it also showed what kids like Billy, Jesse, Shane and Zane have to go through as they deal with their behavioral issues. I found it amazing and inspiring to follow what life was like in that classroom as the children advanced socially and academically. The fact that this entire book was true really emphasized how touching the story was. I would definitely recommend it to anyone 12 and up.

See also my blog review: http://examinedworlds.blogspot.com/20...The depth of world-building and character development in this book is amazing. The style of world-building is different than what you get in Herberts Dune universe or Tolkiens Middle-Earth. Maybe it would have been nice to get more of a sense of the whole planet or what happened on Earth in the last few hundred years, but the world-building here is more tightly-focused on the main characters and their immediate environment. And it works. I feel almost as if I lived this book rather than read it. Theres only one major human character, Juna, and the reader comes to know her well. Most impressively, though, are that you also get to know several alien characters, each with her or his own distinct personality. The first half or so of the book switches POV chapters between the human and the aliens so that the same event is often described from both POVs. This device could have worn thin, but in Thomsons skilled hands it works well right up until the human character becomes more a part of the alien way of life, at which time she, appropriately and artistically enough, intertwines the POVs more. All this world-building and character development take time, however; the only criticism I have is that the book starts to drag a little bit in the middle, but its still well worth the effort.Philosophically, theres a lot to think about concerning the best way to attain knowledge and to live ethically. Should we abide by abstract rules and sanitized observation (represented here by the Alien Contact rules for engaging with alien life) or should we rely more on lived experience, particular judgments, and direct interaction (represented mainly by the main character, Juna -also a big issue in feminist ethics and philosophy of science)? Along the way, theres plenty of ecology, linguistics, and sociology to consider, not to mention the classic big science fiction theme of encountering the other. On that front, these aliens are plenty different, but still somewhat understandable - theyre somewhere between the familiarity of Star Trek aliens and the sheer otherness of Lems Solaris. All of this makes this book comparable with some of my favorites, especially Octavia Butler and Ursula LeGuin. In the end, this book isnt quite on the same plane as the genius of Butler and LeGuin, but its definitely in the same direction.

The Jump Artist, winner of the 2011 Rohr Prize in fiction, was praised as “a remarkable work” by Harper’s Magazine and featured in Publishers Weekly in 2009 as one of ten promising debuts. The story begins in September 1928, when Halsman and his father were hiking in the Tyrolean Alps. While Halsman went ahead on the trail, his father was attacked and murdered. The Jewish 22 year old would be falsely accused of killing his father. The Jump Artist follows his life story from the murder and trial in Austria, into the depths of Halsmans despair in prison, to his rise in Paris and New York as one of the worlds most renowned photographers. Austin Ratner’s work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine and has been honored with the Missouri Review Editors’ Prize in Fiction. He attended the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Before turning to writing he received his M.D. from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and he is co-author of the textbook Concepts in Medical Physiology. This is his first novel.

Book description
THE ANGRY BUDDHIST. (2012). Seth Greenland. *****. This is a new author for me, and the first thing I have to do is to find his earlier two novels and have my library put them on hold for me. It is an excellent novel that deals with politics (mostly dirty), sexism, murder, and – by the way – Buddhism. The setting for the plot is the area in and around 29 Palms. The central theme is the race for office between the incumbant, Randall Duke, a man who has already served three terms, and his challenger, Mary Swain, a former stewardess and wife of a very wealthy man. Mary has had no prior experience in politics, but, as most of the prospective voters will tell you, she has great legs. Randall has vowed not to lose to Mary, and we soon learn of all the dirty tricks he is capable of, though all executed through second parties. Randall also has two liabilities: his youngest brother Dale, who he is in the process of getting out of jail early, and Jimmy Ray, a cop on administrative leave from the police force because of an infraction of the rules and a set-to with the chief of police. Having two brothers like this is not an asset, so Randall turns it around and makes “family” one of his planks. He embraces both of his brothers and tells voters that he puts them first in his life – ahead of politics – and that the world would be a better place if all of us embraced family. Randall doesn’t have a good marriage, either. His wife recently ran off for a long weekend to Mexico with another woman, where she had her first lesbian experience. That would have been OK if it had only been kept quiet! But...in a haze of margueritas, the ladies stopped in a tattoo parlor and had identical anime princesses etched on their buttocks. Where’s the Buddhist? Our ex-cop Jimmy is always in the process of trying to reach some sort of inner calm and understanding through meditation, and consults – on line – with a Buddhist guru who advises him on his program. It doesn’t always work. The novel trots out these diverse characters and gives them a chance to mix it all up to see what happens. The plot, however, is not random. All of the characters by the end of the book seem to have met their proper come-uppance, though not what we as readers would have predicted. Mr. Greenland’s writing reminds me of the styles of Elmore Leonard and Donald Westlake. He is now on my list of “to read” authors, and will likely get on yours too after you finish this book. Highly recommended.

Book description
Last Tuesday morning, a 45-year old woman jumped from the 27th floor of the building where she used to work. That building was just across where I work. She was there, lying on the pavement, lifeless, headless. When she jumped, her head caught one of the ledges of the building and so her head got severed. For almost the whole morning, her body was just there waiting for the investigators. Her head, her limbs, her organs were scattered along the pavement, along the street. People were watching, taking pictures, talking to witnesses. I was there on the 18th floor, watching her and the people, looking down. If I were God looking down from where I was, where was I in all of these? What did God think when the woman was about to jump? What was He thinking when her head got severed? I was reading this book that morning before going to the office. His life was fresh in my mind prior to witnessing the incident. So, I could not help but wonder where was God in all of those.Life of Christ by Giovanni Papini was first published in 1957. Papini was an atheist when he was born. Then he was converted to Catholism and wrote this book. Solely based on the Scriptures, he wrote this book with the intention of introducing Christ to the non-believers or those who do not know Him. So, the book is in the prose form and it does not have footnotes or references to the Holy Bible (you know, the book titles, chapter and verse numbers). So, the reading is easy because the narratives are free-flowing just like any other standard novels. Papini also chose not to preach and so this book felt like a biography. But what makes this more enjoyable is Papinis incandescent prose. Being a former atheist, it really made me wonder how he could write with all the conviction and seemingly inspired thoughts. I have been a Catholic since I was baptized seven months after I was born, but I could not write as brilliant as Papini in this book.I have been a practicing Catholic since the first time my mother brought me to church when I was a toddler. I go to church every Sunday and during days of obligation. I have read the Bible from cover to cover. I have read Harold S, Kushners When Bad Things Happen to Good People (3 stars). I also know that God gave us the rational mind to decide for ourselves. But this is easy to think about or to say.But when you are looking at the reality, when you are face-to-face with senseless death, you still ask: why?

Book description
Are there any ethical values and principles that nonreligious individuals can live by? In a time when many have forsaken otherworldly religions, what does human life mean? What is its significance? Secular humanism attempts to answer these questions in a way that resonates with human aspirations and the findings of science. In this succinct, engaging overview of the secular humanist perspective, philosopher Paul Kurtz describes the many ways in which secular humanism’s scientific, philosophical, and ethical outlook has exerted a profound influence on civilization from the ancient world to the present. Today many schools of thought broadly identify with humanist ideas and values. But Kurtz suggests that secular humanism is especially suitable for the needs of our increasingly secular world because it rejects supernatural accounts of reality and seeks to optimize the fullness of human life in a naturalistic universe. In tune with the most progressive trends of the contemporary world, secular humanism finds meaning in life here and now and expresses confidence in the power of human beings to solve their problems and conquer uncharted frontiers. Kurtz concludes by emphasizing that secular humanism is a bold new paradigm, which weaves together many historical threads, while adding much more that is relevant to our rapidly emerging planetary civilization.
